Hi there! And welcome to our Smooch Chat Plugin video. If you haven’t done so already, please watch our System Overview Video first before continuing. It lays down all of the plugin basics you’ll need for this video.
Now, moving onto the Smooch Chat Plugin.
The Smooch Chat Plugin allows you to link your Smooch Chat account into your app. Smooch Chat is a mobile and web messaging API for apps and businesses. You can use it as a customer service tool, lead generation tool, and connect with your users. Smooch Chat can integrate with popular tools such as Zendesk, Slack, HipChat, and HelpScout. For a list of all of their integrations, check out their website.
Since this is an integration with Smooch Chat, we will cover how to integrate it into your app and connect it with Slack. If you need additional help setting up your account or have questions regarding their features and functionality, feel free to contact their support team for help at any time.
To add a Smooch Chat plugin to your app, go to Plugins and Add Plugin. Search for the Smooch Chat Plugin in the search field, click add, then name it. If you’d like to also add this plugin to your Side Menu, you can simply check this box. If not, no worries, we’ll go over how to add it to the Side Menu later on in the video.
You’ll see here that you can make your Smooch Chat Private or Public. Private makes the chat only be seen between you and one end user per conversation. Private chat is best used if you’re using Smooch as a customer service tool. That way, the issues you discuss are kept privately between your organization and your users. Making it public changes it into a public chatroom — which means everything posted into it can be seen by everyone on the app. Making it a Public chat would be useful as a tool to build a community between your users, giving them free reign to communicate with everyone else about whatever.
Keep in mind that you can create as many plugin instances as you want. So you can create both public and private chat rooms.
If you’re looking for a public chatroom function in your app, we also have a Social Wall Plugin that does just that! Depending on your specific need, this might work out better for you. Feel free to check out our video on it here.
To integrate your Smooch Chat account, All you need to do is copy and paste your Smooch Chat API Key into this field here. You can access this by going to your Smooch Chat dashboard and selecting the app that you’d like to access in this drop-down menu. Then click on Settings, scroll down, and copy the App Token. Go back to your Smooch Plugin page and paste the App Token in this field here. You should see your Smooch chat appear in the emulator.
Next, you’ll need to type in a Chat header. If you’re integrating a customer service platform like Zendesk, then using a phrase like “How can we help?” would be good. If you’re integrating a chatroom-style platform like Slack, then maybe something like “Tell everyone what you’re up to” or “Introduce yourself” would be more appropriate.
Very quickly, I’ll show you how to add an integration to your Smooch Chat. For this demonstration I’ll be using Slack. Log into your Smooch account and select the App that you inserted into your Smooch Plugin. For whatever integration you’re using, make sure that you are currently logged into it on your browser. Scroll down the page until you find it, then click on it. This will take you to this next page that will ask to Connect. Click the button to connect. On the next page, click Authorize. Go ahead and make any changes necessary to this page and then click “Save Changes”. Now your integration is complete. If you return to the Overview page, your integration should now be authenticated.
If you have any questions about how to connect other Smooch integrations, please contact Smooch’s support team or refer to their help documentation.
And with that you’re all done with creating your Smooch Plugin! Don’t forget to click Publish to push out your changes. If you haven’t upgraded, please upgrade so that you can publish your changes.
Now you’ve just created the plugin and did not add it to the side menu, it’s not yet accessible to users because you haven’t placed it anywhere in your app. You will need to add it to the app on the Home Plugin, in a Folder Plugin, and/or to the Side Menu. If you already know how to do this, feel free to skip this next section.
If you have the Launcher or Folder Plugin selected for your Home Plugin, you can add it to the Home Plugin by clicking go to Home Plugin. Once you’re there, scroll down and click “Add Plugin Instance”. Now find the Plugin you created by searching for the title you gave it, selecting it, and clicking “Apply” at the bottom.
To add it to a Folder Plugin, navigate to any Folder Plugin you’ve created and click on “Add Plugin Instance”, then search for the title you gave it, select it, and click “Apply” at the bottom.
To add it to the Side Menu, go to Plugins then Side Menu and click on “Select Plugin Instance” and, you guessed it, search for the title you gave it, select it, and click “Apply” at the bottom.
Congratulations! Your Smooch Plugin is now accessible within your app. Thank you so much for watching. Be sure to check out our other Help Videos and we’ll see you next time!
